The Singleton of Glen Ord 40 Year Old is a deeply decadent Single Malt Scotch brought to you by two visionary craftswomen, Malt Master Maureen Robinson and the legendary Lorena Vásquez, who has been the Master Blender at Zacapa Rum for over 35 years. These two titans of the industry have created an incredible whisky for the grand finale of Singleton’s three-part Epicurean Odyssey Series. And it’s one for the chocolate lovers out there…

The deliciousness of chocolate has been cherished by civilisations throughout history. Using experimental casks to the extreme, Singleton have captured the magic of cacao without touching a single bean.

When most whisky makers talk about secondary maturation, you’re looking at a couple of years tops. But The Singleton of Glen Ord 40 Year Old received a secondary maturation spanning almost three decades. It started life as a particularly flavoursome 12-year-old Scotch, which Maureen Robinson then transferred to rum casks for 28 years (the longest secondary maturation in the brand’s history). The barrels were then married together in solera casks used to make Zacapa XO and Royal Rum. The whisky was then filled into 1,716 bottles. What’s inside each one sings of dark chocolate, plum crumble, poires belle Hélène, Polish plum pierniczki (those moreish chocolate-coated gingerbreads with the plum filling), chocolate-covered toffee, caramelised pineapple, banoffee pie, black pepper, oak spices, sage, apple crisps, the salt and sour tang of umeboshi, and the wax and smoke combo of snuffed candles. A phenomenal dram for anybody lucky enough to get their hands on it.

The Singleton brand is actually a trio of single malts; Dufftown and Glendullan from Speyside and the grassy and fruity Glen Ord from the Black Isle to the west, the latter being famed for its golden barley and pure water. Diageo launched this super-smooth brand in 2006 in a bid to rival the likes of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, and eventually become the world’s number one selling malt. Established in 1838, Glen Ord is the oldest of the three distilleries in the family and the award-winning whisky produced there is known for its red and black fruits (which is probably what the fish on their logo is leaping out of the water to reach). Much of The Singleton of Glen Ord finds its way into blends like Johnnie Walker and Dewar’s, so uncovering a Single Malt of this age tends to be a rare and fleeting thing.
