Every year since 2001 Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. What makes them so exciting is Diageo’s unparalleled ability to cherry-pick anything from a lost barrel produced at a ‘ghost’ distillery to an experimental expression from a world-renowned brand. These are one-of-a-kind bottlings that are not to be missed…

Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender Craig Wilson the 2021 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. Each bottle carries a QR code providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries as told by Scottish actors Siobhan Redmond and Lorne MacFadyen and the digital artist Ken Taylor. Fans of Game of Thrones and the accompanying whiskies will find much to love here.

The Singleton of Glendullan 19 Year Old Special Release 2021 has been matured in American oak barrels before being finished in Cognac casks. This is doubly intriguing because we rarely see Cognac cask releases from Diageo and The Singleton of Glendullan is usually reserved for the American market. Rich and rewarding it shimmers with notes of marzipan apple pie buttery baking toffee sultanas lemon muffins chocolate orange cheesecake and cinnamon-topped pastel de nata. Cognac casks can sometimes overwhelm Scotch but the fragrant charm and honeyed lushness of The Singleton of Glendullan still comes through gorgeously. It can only be described as liquid gold.

The Singleton brand is actually a trio of single malts; Dufftown and Glendullan from Speyside and the grassy and fruity Glen Ord from the Black Isle to the west. Diageo launched this super-smooth brand in 2006 in a bid to rival the likes of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich and eventually become the world’s number one selling malt. Established in 1897 Glendullan is renowned for its fresh orchard fruit. However as most of it ends up heading to the USA or into the Old Parr blended whisky it’s seldom seen as a Single Malt on these shores. So finding a natural strength version likes this is a thrilling opportunity.
