MXI Selección de Barricas is something fresh and exciting from Tinto Pesquera. Created by the new generation of Familia Fernández Rivera using grapes from the highlands of Pesquera it was matured for 14 months in carefully chosen barrels that were toasted to a medium char. This vintage presented a generous harvest providing the opportunity for innovation and experimentation and the results are spectacular. Blackberry raspberry creamy black cherry yoghurt vanilla and toffee notes are combined with rounded tannins and a food-friendly acidity. Treat this as you might a particularly fine Malbec think about chargrilling chocolatey Mexican mole game pie wild boar ragù or Shaanxi cuisine.

Tinto Pesquera is a 16th Century stone winery where Familia Fernández Rivera first began making wine in 1975 sparking a winemaking revolution that put Ribera del Duero on the map for all connoisseurs. Alejandro Fernández who sadly died in 2021 made his money in sugar beet harvesting machines. He sold his patent and bought a vineyard in Pesquera de Duero in 1972. At that time the only local winery of note was Vega Sicilia and the region didn’t even have a Denominación de Origen classification yet. When Robert Parker compared Tinto Pesquera to Château Pétrus the world took notice and it has been an icon of Ribera del Duero ever since.

Alejandro’s granddaughters (Inés Bocos Fernández Elvira Bocos Fernández Lucía Pascual Fernández Ángela Pascual Fernández and Elisa Martínez Martínez) have done him proud with MXI.
