Trinity Hill Gimblett Syrah 18

93 points, “This wine kicks off with cherry, currant, ground white pepper, olive, graphite and mocha on the nose. On the palate, the tannins are taut and fine, and a graphite character presides over crunchy fruit and the long, spicy finish. It’s a finessed wine that’s approachable now but can be cellared until 2028.” – Wine Enthusiast

The concept for Trinity Hill was conceived more than three decades ago in a London restaurant. Award-winning winemaker John Hancock met with Robert and Robyn Wilson in their restaurant, Bleeding Heart, near Farringdon. Over a glass of wine, the seed of an idea was planted. Now, according to Robert Parker: “Trinity Hill is one of Hawke’s Bay’s outstanding producers.”

Despite being the country’s second largest wine region, Hawke’s Bay is sometimes unfairly overlooked. But that means that there are some exceptional discoveries to be made, and for outstanding value. A perfect example is this vegan-friendly Syrah from the stony soils of Gimblett Gravels. The pioneering Trinity Hill were one of the first wineries to plant Syrah in the subregion of Hawke’s Bay, and they add a little Viognier skins to it, à la Côte-Rôtie, for complexity, aromatics and mouthfeel.

Imagine one of those scarab beetles you see shining like a jewel at a museum; compact, powerful, exotic, polished, pleasingly rounded and inky black with flashes of vivid colour. That’s what Trinity Hill’s Gimblett Gravels Syrah reminds us of a a jewel at a museum; powerful, exotic, polished, pleasingly rounded and inky black with flashes of vivid colour. The power, darkness and roundness come from black cherries, black plums, black pepper and black olives; the flashes of colour come from blueberries, violets, mint and raspberries; and the exotic flavour comes displayed as mixed spice and vanilla. What a wonderful wine this is, and it will develop glorious gamey character with more time in the bottle.
