97 points “The focus to this polished red is gorgeous with floral aromas colouring the blackberries and blueberries. Full-bodied yet the tight polished tannins give a sense of levity and refinement.” – James Suckling

The Bramare Malbec from Viña Cobos’ Chañares Estate – located in one of the coolest corners of the Uco Valley’s Tunuyán sub-region – received Wine Spectator’s top score for any Argentinian Malbec from the 2017 vintage. So finding a better example from that year will be extremely challenging. The only problem is that only 500 cases were made making it very hard to come by.

Paul Hobbs redesigned his whole approach in this vintage and the results were remarkable. Powerful muscular technically refined and full of energy just waiting to be released; Bramare Malbec is like a sprinter coiled up in the Olympic starting blocks. But it has the build and stamina for a much longer run so this is one to slip into the cellar and forget about for a few years. Matured in French oak (53% new) for 18 months this vegan-friendly and velvety red glistens with notes of black plum blackberry blackcurrant dark chocolate cream fig tobacco thyme and baking spices. Don’t miss out on the Malbec of the vintage.

The first wine Paul Hobbs ever tasted was a 1962 Château d’Yquem that his father served the family in paper cups. It ignited a passion in him. Now he is a winemaking legend. This perfectionist was the first person to bottle single varietal Malbec in Argentina he headed up the team at Opus One for a long time he has been described by Forbes Magazine as the “Steve Jobs” of wine and he pioneered scientific studies into the difference between French and American oak. Famed for his Californian wines including the much sought-after Cabernet Sauvignons from the Beckerstoffer Dr Crane and Beckerstoffer to Kalon vineyards and also the Viña Cobos winery he started in Argentina after consulting with Catena Zapata. His style is immaculately clean with laser precision and tasting his wines confirms that he’s one of the finest and most knowledgeable winemakers working anywhere in the world today. In short anything he drops is worthy of your attention.
