“A smooth blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (51%) with Shiraz and Merlot. Ripe black fruit aromas edged in spice blackcurrant leaf and eucalypt. Ageing in a mixture of French and American barriques and hogsheads adds structure and spice to the generous black fruit with ripe tannins plus savoury notes that linger on the spicy finish. Great with steak and beefy dishes.” – Decanter Magazine
Wirra Wirra’s ironstone cellars in McLaren Vale are home to mischief adventure and some of Australia’s most exciting wines. The winery was originally built by an eccentric ex-cricketer in 1894 although it was re-built in the 1960s to provide more room for fun and wine. Their playful nature is perfectly illustrated by the fact that this is probably the only winery in the world with its own medieval-style catapult built for flinging watermelons (sometimes filled with fireworks) into neighbouring fields.
Anyway we digress. Church Block was the first wine produced under the Wirra Wirra label and has become a firm Australian favourite. Twist the screwcap on this half bottle and you’ll be greeted by a controlled explosion of blackberry crème de cassis plum crumble dark chocolate black olive tapenade thyme and cedar. Just watch out for watermelons.
