Wood’s was established by a distribution company from Liverpool back in 1887 and their Old Navy Rum (previously called 100 Old Navy Rum) is still distilled at the Diamond Distillery on Guyana using the exact same recipe to this very day. The blend contains some rum distilled on a wooden still one of the last remaining stills of its kind in the world.
This dark Demerara rum is bottled at ‘Navy Strength’ which is the alcohol level at which if gunpowder becomes soaked with spirit from broken barrels during the heat of battle it will still light. And that’s a fire-in-the-belly 57%. Deep and dark as the ocean this rum is brimming with notes of toffee treacle caramel brown sugar festive spices Christmas pudding and pepper but it’s surprisingly smooth considering its ABV.
