Great value Jamaican pot still rum that’s more than ‘worthy’ of a place on your rum bar.
Located in the Lluidas Vale Worthy Park Estate is rum royalty. Connoisseurs will be familiar with the name from independent bottlings and also from The Duppy Share (where it is blended with spirit from another Harvey Nichols favourite Foursquare). Established in 1670 the land the estate sits on was ‘gifted’ to Lieutenant Francis Price by Oliver Cromwell when colonisation of Jamaica passed from the Spanish to the English. They began sugar cultivation fifty years later and rum production started in 1741 long before any other existing distillery on the island. Sitting slap bang in the middle of Jamaica guarded by mountains in unbelievably verdant surroundings Worthy Park Estate built a new state-of-the-art distillery in 2005 and shortly after launched a new flagship brand Rum-Bar.
Rum-Bar Gold is a Jamaican classic barrel aged for at least four years in ex-Jack Daniels casks. Funky and full-on it oozes baked apples ripe banana vanilla custard treacle cocoa-dusted chocolates honey and rum and raisin fudge. This much character at this price point is rare and not to be missed. Sip it neat or mix it into all kinds of cocktail. In fact Worthy Park Estate’s Commercial Manager and Ambassador Alexander ‘Zan’ Kong has personally recommended the following recipe for Rum-Bar Gold:
Planter’s Punch
- 60ml Rum-Bar Gold
- 20ml pineapple juice
- 15ml orange juice
- 15ml fresh lime juice
- 8ml grenadine
Method: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a highball glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and fronds.
Dark ‘n’ Stormy
- 45ml Rum-Bar Gold
- 75ml ginger beer
Method: Combine ingredients over ice and add a chunky lime wedge for garnish.
