It’s no secret that we love the arrival of winter for the fashion, the parties and even the cosy nights in. Our skin, unfortunately, just doesn’t feel the same way. From freezing cold temperatures and icy winds to steaming hot showers and central heating, we pretty much give it zero chance to thrive at this time of year. Luckily, a well-planned winter skincare routine will always come to the rescue. Keep scrolling to discover our go-to guide that’ll keep your complexion looking and feeling its healthy, dewy self all season long.

USE A MOISTURISING CLEANSER

Since the winter weather is so drying to our skin, choosing products with extra moisture is key to keeping your complexion smooth and soft. With that in mind, we recommend opting for cream-based cleansers when washing your face. These hydrating formulas will soothe and moisturise, unlike foam based cleansers which can quickly upset your skin’s pH levels and lead to dryness and irritation. Use your cream cleanser with lukewarm water for supple and dewy skin.

GENTLY EXFOLIATE DRY SKIN

Let’s be honest, avoiding dry skin altogether in winter is a luxury most of us don’t have. No need to panic, aside from moisturising your skin back to its former glow, you can use gentle facial scrubs and exfoliators to treat and smooth out any dry patches. Reach for your exfoliator once or twice a week after you’ve cleansed your face so you can be sure it’s makeup-free, then use it to carefully buff away dead skin, remove excess oils and thoroughly cleanse your pores.

USE OILS AND SERUMS FOR EXTRA HYDRATION

As those with dry skin will know, sometimes your regular moisturiser just doesn’t cut it in winter. If that’s you, consider adding an extra hydrating oil or serum into your winter skincare routine. These products will penetrate deeper into your skin and can even provide an additional barrier against the harmful effects of cold weather. Apply it before your moisturiser for maximum results.

MOSITURISE YOUR WINTER SKIN

Give your complexion the shot of re-hydration it needs this winter and always remember to moisturise your face after cleansing and exfoliating. Rich creams with thicker consistencies and more potent, hydrating ingredients will be a saviour for your complexion from autumn through to spring.

TREAT TIRED EYES WITH EYE CREAM

If dark circles and puffiness around the eyes seem like a cold-weather tradition for you, introducing an eye cream into your skincare routine might be just what you need. Revive tired eyes with a cooling balm or gel and look eternally well-rested with regular use of a firming under eye serum.

DON'T PUT AWAY YOUR SPF

Summer may feel like a distant memory but that doesn’t mean you can drop the SPF application from your winter beauty routine. It’s true, the sun’s most harmful UV rays aren’t quite as strong in winter, but we promise they’re still there. Keep applying that sunscreen each time you go outside to keep your skin healthy and protected all year round.

KEEP LIP BALM ON HAND TO SOOTHE CHAPPED LIPS

Plummeting temperatures usually means dry, chapped lips. Since we don’t love the look and definitely don’t appreciate the soreness, we recommend keeping a lip balm on hand at all times. With regular use, it should stop your pout from drying out in the first place. If not, it’ll work to calm your lips and leave them feeling soft and nourished.

DON'T FORGET TO MOISTURISE YOUR BODY

It’s not only the skin on our hands and faces that need a little extra TLC in winter. The skin on your body can quickly become dry and irritated too. So, after your shower, pat your skin dry with a soft, clean towel, and apply your moisturiser whilst your skin is still warm and a little damp. It’ll absorb much quicker and can even soak up some of the water still on your skin for an extra hydrating boost.

REMEMBER YOUR HAND CREAM

Somewhere in between the biting winter chill and the warmth of our central heating, our hands seem to suffer most at this time of year. To combat any redness or dry patches, always keep a hand cream in your bag so you can apply it throughout the day. This will quickly soothe your hands, stop them from becoming sore, and help your skin to feel soft and smooth again.
