We’ve just found our new favourite summer gin. The multi-award-winning Lemon Verbena Gin focuses on The Secret Garden Distillery’s home-grown lemon verbena but there’s also juniper coriander angelica and winter savoury in here. It blows across the palate like a cooling summer breeze carrying lime blossom citrus zest sea spray and lemon sherbet. All summer long we’ll be drinking this in Martinis Southside Rickeys and G&Ts the latter mixed with a clean classic tonic and garnished with a twist of lemon peel.
Lemon verbena – famed for its aromatic oils and often used in teas – was first brought to Europe from South America by Spanish and Portuguese explorers. Although we’re not suggesting this gin is the latest superfood lemon verbena is packed with antioxidants and is believed to aid digestion relieve insomnia reduce inflammation and boost the immune system. So if you have some lemon verbena growing in the garden why not pop a sprig in your cocktail?
In 2012 the husband-and-wife team of Hamish and Liberty Martin – an ex-wine merchant with a first-class diploma in Herbology and a trained beekeeper with a penchant for antiques – bought a derelict plot of land at the foot of the Pentland Hills on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Over several years they transformed that wasteland into The Secret Herb Garden which is now home to over 600 naturally and sustainably grown and tended to plants. Although it was never their intention in 2017 they launched an acclaimed range of 100% natural flavour gins which rapidly became bestsellers at Harvey Nichols. The Secret Garden Distillery formerly known as The Old Curiosity Distillery creates spirits that are deeply rooted in nature. All the botanicals used from the juniper to the signature flowers are hand-tended handpicked air-dried and lovingly infused. Committed to reducing their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment The Secret Garden Distillery’s labels are now made from 30% grass which cuts the energy and water consumption required and the CO2 produced while making the paper. They use no chemicals whatsoever choosing to heal the plants they grow with other plants. The security seals on their bottles are now fully biodegradable and all shipping materials are recyclable. So this is a brand working hand in hand with nature.
