One of the newest additions to the range at The Secret Garden Distillery Wild Gin is a wonderfully herbal and organic spirit inspired by the work of the RSPB and the endangered Flow Country the rolling peatland and wetland area of Caithness and Sutherland. It was distilled using juniper bog myrtle nettle sweet cicely and eight other indigenous botanicals some of which can be found in Flow Country. For those not familiar with this area of Scotland it’s the largest expanse of blanket bog in Europe and a huge natural store for carbon holding twice as much as the dwindling number of trees in the UK. So raise a cocktail or a gin and tonic (garnished with rosemary) to this vital piece of landscape at the northern tip of Scotland which is constantly fighting the Climate Crisis on our behalf.
In 2012 the husband-and-wife team of Hamish and Liberty Martin – an ex-wine merchant with a first-class diploma in Herbology and a trained beekeeper with a penchant for antiques – bought a derelict plot of land at the foot of the Pentland Hills on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Over several years they transformed that wasteland into The Secret Herb Garden which is now home to over 600 naturally and sustainably grown and tended to plants. Although it was never their intention in 2017 they launched an acclaimed range of 100% natural flavour gins which rapidly became bestsellers at Harvey Nichols. The Secret Garden Distillery formerly known as The Old Curiosity Distillery creates spirits that are deeply rooted in nature. All the botanicals used from the juniper to the signature flowers are hand-tended handpicked air-dried and lovingly infused. They use no chemicals whatsoever choosing to heal the plants they grow with other plants. The security seals on their bottles are now fully biodegradable and all shipping materials are recyclable.
